Making the Commitment to Exercise
Making the commitment to get more exercise is one of the most important things you can do for your health, but making this commitment is just the first step! After you make the decision, you need to decide how you are going to exercise. Once you have chosen a plan, you need to get out there and do it!
One popular exercise program involves stretching and strength training. These types of programs are sometimes called yoga or Pilates. Both yoga and Pilates train you to use your mind to control your body, achieving flexibility and strength while at the same time bringing your body into calm control. Anyone, no matter their age or fitness level, can participate in yoga or Pilates training. Another benefit of these exercise programs is they can be done affordably at home with videos or DVDs. Many people do enjoy taking yoga classes at their local gyms, however, because they feel motivated by others in their class.
Aerobics are another popular way to exercise. By definition, aerobics are any form of exercise that gets your heart rate up for an extended period of time. Usually when people think of aerobics they think of aerobics done standing in one limited area, marching, walking, and moving in place. Aerobic exercise usually involves repetitive activity done to get your heart and respiratory rates up.
Weight training is another popular way to exercise. Most people who work at weight training do so at gyms where they have access to a wide range of weight machines. Weight training involves using a resistance, the weight, to challenge your muscles and build up strength. Weight training should be done as part of an overall exercise program, in conjunction with aerobics that get your heart rate up and lungs pumping! The best way to weight train is to work one particular muscle group one day, then let that group rest on the following day while you work a different area. Muscles need a chance to rest and repair after weight training sessions. If exercising in gyms makes you nervous, you can purchase a weight training apparatus for your home.
People who are already somewhat physically fit often enjoy running as their exercise program. Running can be hard on the joints, particularly for those who are overweight and out of shape, but for those who need extra challenge in their exercise routine it is a good choice. If you are pursuing running for your exercise plan, you need to invest in a good pair of running shoes to keep their feet safe.
Regardless of what type of exercise program you choose, the point is that you need to have one! Get out there, and get moving! Your health and longevity depends on it!
