Tips For New Parents: How To Stay Sane

When a newborn comes home from the hospital, it's both exciting and overwhelming. Still riding a roller coaster of emotions and hormones from pregnancy and birth, many new mothers find the adjustment rocky, as do new fathers who now have to adjust to a whole new lifestyle. How do you keep your sanity while giving your baby the best care possible? Whether you're a first time parent or have done it all before, try these tips for keeping your stress level to a minimum. Don't bottle up your feelings. If you are on your tenth diaper of the day, having trouble breastfeeding, or hate the mess your house has become, tell someone. Share a laugh with your partner, mother or friend. Talking about what's bothering you will keep you connected with family and friends, and ease some of the difficulty of adjusting to your life as a parent. Put down the coffee mug. Although it might be tempting to exist on caffeine and sugar to get you through those sleepless nights, focus on eating healthy foods and drinking water rather than coffee or soda. Eating a balanced diet will help with sleep regulation, mood and energy levels. Leave the house. Staying home day after day is boring, and sometimes a change of scenery and a breath of fresh air makes a world of difference. Load your infant in the stroller and go for a walk around your neighbourhood - even if it's just for 15 minutes. Play it by ear. Don't worry about the vow you made the night before to sweep the floor, or the guilt you're feeling over not having friends over to the house to see the baby. Everyone wants to see the baby, hold the baby, and give you baby gifts. But schedule visits that work for you and your baby's routine, and if you're too tired to entertain guests, say so. Let the house stay messy for a few days until you can get to it. If someone offers you help with housecleaning or baby care, take them up on it. Don't feel like you have to do it all. Finally, enjoy the time you have with your newborn. With all its ups and downs, parenting is still a richly rewarding experience. You'll look back on this time with fondness - and perhaps even nostalgia - so focus on building a lasting bond with your new baby!
