Men's Sexual Health
Men’s sexual health is not a topic the media seems to talk about quite as frequently as women’s sexual health, but it is an important one nonetheless. Men should be concerned with male sexuality as much as women are about female sexuality. Men also need to take precautions against pregnancy in their partners, as well as protection against STD's. Condoms, the male birth control option, are something that men need to understand how and when to use.
Male sexuality starts at adolescence. While women have a more defined change that marks their entrance into the world of adulthood, boys go through a change during puberty as well. They begin to notice girls and can become aroused by the females around them. This is when boys need to be taught about their sexual health.
STD's are one the forefront of the male sexual health world. Men need to know what to do to avoid contracting or passing on STD's when engaging in sexual activity. STD's are those diseases that are passed on to another person through sexual contact. Some, such as AIDS, are life threatening. Others, such as herpes, are simply uncomfortable. Many can be treated if they are discovered early enough.
Avoiding STD's starts with good sexual decisions. The best way to avoid contracting an STD is to avoid sexual contact outside of a committed relationship, such as marriage. Men who do not choose to be abstinent, however, should be aware of their options to avoid STD's. Condoms are the most common form of STD prevention used by men. Condom use, when done properly, eliminates bodily fluids from passing from one person to the other during sexual contact. This is the most common way to transmit STD's, which means condoms are effective in preventing them. The problem is that sometimes condoms break, and often they are not used correctly, which means the man is still at risk for transmitting or contracting the disease.
Another aspect of male sexuality that is often overlooked, but is a problem for many men, is impotence. Impotence is the inability to either achieve or maintain an erection during sexual encounters. The most common cause of impotence is a lack of proper blood flow to the penis. Many men are embarrassed by this problem and do not seek medical treatment. Most impotence problems are psychological. Men who are having problems in their relationships are going to have trouble with impotence, and the best cure is to work through the problems. When psychological problems are not the cause, medications such can be used to treat impotence. The good news is there are impotence treatements - men just need to ask about them!
