Nosebleeds are a common complaint for many children. Either from injury, high places, or nervousness, a nose bleed can be an uncomfortable - and messy - experience. If your child gets a nosebleed, follow these tips to stop the bleeding: 1) Pinch your child's nose with your thumb and forefinger. Hold for five seconds and repeat until the bleeding has entirely stopped. 2) Don't get your child to put his or her head between their legs. Make sure your child's head is higher than their heart. Keep them quiet and still while pinching your child's nose. 3) Use lots of ice. Apply an icepack or cold compress to your child's nose. You can reduce this risk by trimming your child's nails, as kids often pick their noses and start nosebleeds. Keep your child from bending over or blowing his or her nose, as this may trigger the nosebleed again. If your child is getting frequent nosebleeds, you should check with a pediatrician to rule out other health problems. Occasionally, nosebleeds can be a sign of a deeper medical issue like leukemia or a blood clotting disorder. To prevent nosebleeds in the future, use a humidifier in your child's room to avoid dryness. If you smoke, quit, as this can irritate your child's nasal passage and cause nosebleeds.
