Vision Correction
Many people use some form of vision correction in order to make it through the day. Whether it's a pair of eyeglasses or contact lenses, most of us don't have perfect vision. Though you might not like the idea of vision correction solutions, there are many different options that will work for different people and different lifestyles. If you're finding yourself squinting more often than you used to, it may be time to look at your vision correction options.
There are two main kinds of people with vision correction needs. Those that are unable to see far distances are diagnosed with nearsightedness, while those that can see these far distances are diagnosed with farsightedness. If you find that you can not see either distance clearly, this is common too, especially with age. To correction these vision problems, you can consider eyeglasses, contact lenses, or eye surgery.
Eyeglasses are the most common choice in vision correction as they are relatively inexpensive and easy to use. Simply go to your eye doctor to have your eyes checked and your sight measured. When you have your prescription from the doctor, you will choose a frame for your eyeglasses and a lens with your prescription measurement will be inserted into this frame. Glasses are very convenient for those that don't want to try contacts and are easy to replace each year or two with a new lens prescription. There are many stylish frames to choose from as well as sunglasses that can be made with your prescription.
The disadvantages to glasses are their need to be replaced every year, their potentially high price, and their fragileness.
If you find that your life requires you to be more active, you might want to try contact lenses. These small pieces of plastic are inserted into your eye and onto the surface in order to change the way light is reflected into your retina. These are easy to use and allow you to keep your face free of the physical structure of glasses. You can also choose different colors of contacts as well as different permeability measurements – this will provide you with longer wearing times (some disposable contact lenses can even be worn for a month at a time without replacing). Contact lenses can be expensive as they need to be replaced at regular intervals and also require contact lens solution for cleaning, storage containers and protein removers. You will also need to remove them at night, so they can be troublesome if you like low maintenance options.
Contact lenses can increase the risk of eye infections and can also cause eye dryness that requires surgery or medication intervention.
Some patients will want to choose eye surgery, like laser eye surgery to help them see things clearly again. Instead of having to wear eyeglasses or put in contact lenses, you will be able to have the laser procedure and be able to see clearly again. Though you may not have perfect vision for the rest of your life, laser eye surgery can certainly help you to see more clearly without the hassle of other vision correction options.
